Description

This darling pair of glass jars (unused, but presumably for expensive salve or whatever) has a well-done micromosaic top which snaps shut. Made as a set and selling as a set. I've been collecting fine and super-fine micromosaics for 20 years and this is the only set I've seen on glass jars. SIZE: glass jar 2.25" W at widest. complete jar is 1" tall. micromosaic diameter is 1.25". The micromosaic patterns are different from each other, but the jars are made to match. one is blue with orange hand-painted flowers, the other is smoky opaque (over clear glass; view the photo from the base, you can see right through) with pale blue flowers, also hand-painted. _____ ABOUT Micromosaics: In the 1700s, when the Vatican was finally almost done getting those big ole painted walls redone in glass mosaic, there was a shiver through the multi-generation mosaic family dynasties: "It's almost done... now what?" The mosaics were great--they would stay bright and shiny for hundreds of years, and not peel and flake like paint. But now what would all those next-generation mosaic artists do for a job? One of the young rebels, Giacomo Raffaelli, figured out an answer: Go small. In 1773, 20-year-old Giacomo had his first art show with exquisite tiny, tiny mosaics... micromosaics. It was a revelation. Today, we can look back on the range of style and quality of micromosaics that followed his innovative start. The active period of micromosaic production ended by the early 1900s, when there were less tourists traveling Europe, and those who went could take home photographs instead of paintings or micromosaic souvenirs. There were also less people willing to pay for the tremendous amount of hours required for the fine, beautiful works of the earlier days. _________ ABOUT Happy Hour Antiques & Auctions: We are a family owned and operated company.
